My brother works for Microsoft and he said the tech guys at work told him this was the best program on the market. While CCleaner is a very basic tool, BoostSpeed features over 18 tools for complete computer maintenance and ultimate speed up.
I've been extremely happy with Auslogics BoostSpeed and will continue to use it. Ccleaner is used to delete some of the files that Windows creates for administrative purposes. These include log and temporary files, memory dumps, the files in the recycle bin and so on.
Ccleaner also incorporates a registry cleaner. Like most registry cleaners, Ccleaner does not repair a damaged registry, what it does is usually just remove malformed registry entries. The value of this is debatable as the registry has thousands of entries and removal of a couple of dozen malformed ones does not provide any signigficant advantage.
CCleaner is the number-one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. Obviously I use Ccleaner for non-registry cleaning too. Apart from the automatic updates, I don't really use any of the Cloud features. Please just use Geek Uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller.
Geek Uninstaller is what I use. Its a tiny single executable app. GU removes only files and registry bits related to the program being uninstalled. Though, I also don't have a use for most of the things in CCleaner other than it's temp file removal.

There's really no way for it to affect performance, and like you say, it's going to use very little storage space. Don't clean your registry unless you know what you're doing! That's not a task that will improve your PC performance at all!
Issues that aren't actually issues. Removing entries in the registry can only cause problems for the future when Windows or some other software require something from it that those dumb programs ended up removing.
The update files for an up-to-date windows 10 install should take up less than 10GB more for 7, but not, sounds like something is wrong with your install, and deleting temp files is unlikely to solve the actual problem.
My boot drive is 60 and it's fine You have to clean that stuff out every once in a while, but you ought to do that anyways. Except Windows will automatically clear those old restore points and such when space is limited.
It CAN use up a lot of space, but doesn't need to. Neither have any issues. His ssd and hard drive both had 3 partitions and only the C partition had any data on it, and he didn't know how to clean it nor did he know what a partition was.
I wasn't talking about the average knowledgeable user, I'm talking about the people who barely know how to download things on the internet. When free space gets low, Windows will suggest running it's own cleanup tool which is perfectly adequate.
That totally unskilled user should categorically not use a tool like CCleaner. The only difference between CCleaner and Windows Disk Cleanup is that CCleaner will also "clean" your registry something nontypical user ever needs to do, and that CAN certainly cause harm ; windows disk cleanup will remove all the same temp files.
With that said, I've never seen a store bought laptop with more than two "user facing drives" one drive with two partitions, or two drives - I've definitely never seen a laptop with 2 drives hosting 6 partitions, that's just madness and dumb.
Windows already has all the tools this user needs. He certainly got a messed up initial PC configuration, but that's not really relevant. Fortunately, he's just running zounds of chrome tabs so while he's got tons of unused hard drive space he doesn't know how to use, he doesn't really need any anyways.
I've attempted to explain some of that to him, and I also have never seen a pre-partitioned store bought laptop - my hunch is it was a floor model that got messed with. I really wish that when I searched for something it would search on the computer and not on the internet.

Sure, alternatives exist but it's so much more convenient to have an all in one solution instead of having 5 different programs. Do what I did and use a version from or so. I pulled mine from my NAS, but you can get them online.

I stopped using them years ago as they were placebo, times change though so are they any better now? You don't have to open every program and do it yourself. That's the main reason I use it every once in a while. I barely have used Windows 10 planning to come back to PC in the coming months.

It also wipes your free space and will uninstall programs, etc. All with one click of a button. That's a bit disingenuous. You don't need to resort to the command line for basic system maintenance, we're talking about Windows not Ubuntu.
All the maintenance you need to do in Windows is GUI based, and you don't even need to know exactly what apps to run since you can search for terms in Start. You could save those lines into a text file and call it cleanup. Bonus, you learn something about how your pc works.
Yeah but CCleaner provides backups in case things go wrong for the cache and registry cleaning, and there's still several features not covered by that text file that would require extra steps.
I was not talking about ccleaner but just your statement about having to type the commands every time. While Windows makes an effort to remain backward compatible, any modern cleanup commands would utilise cmd.
The hell do you do to get such amounts of temp files? For me Windows takes care of them and I never have a significant amount. With CCleaner you can tell all your friends and family about how clean you butthole computer is and then they can tell all their friends about their grandson the computer expert.
Suddenly I had to seperatly uninstall the Startup Icon and found two similar astronomical numbers when I ran Regedit and looked up Corel. I think I will delete those but maybe not. OK I'll run the McAfee and see if it deletes them and check back.

Not with CCleaner anyhow. You can use an Install Tracker to install a new application. This utility will scan your registry before you install the software, and then scan it again after the installation, keeping a record or log of the changes in the registry.
This link is the last freeware version. Download from the "download" link and not the "home page" link. There's another very good freeware application called Revo Uninstaller, which tackles the problem from the other direction.
It uninstalls a program using the programs own uninstaller, and then scans your pc for any leftover files, folders, and registry entries. It has different depths of scan available, and lists its results for you to peruse before deleting.
To date, I've not had any issues with either the system or registry cleaning components of CClenaer. Same here, been using both features of CCleaner and never any issuses with the registry cleaner.
